Nerja Cave

Nerja is a small town on the Axarquia Costa del Sol east of Malaga. In itself it is an attractive little town to visit but is also home to the Nerja caves (Cuevas de Nerja). These caves are considered one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century and they have become one of Spain’s most popular attractions.

Easily accessible to visitors, the caves are just 3km from Nerja town centre on the slopes of the Sierra Almijara mountains, with regular bus services. From Malaga, only a 35 minute drive. (add 2 hours more from Ronda.)

A Daytrip to Nerja from Ronda

Visitors to Ronda find the city to be a wonderful location from which to explore the rest of Andalucia, and the Axarquía coast is within reach if you like road trips! (i.e. its quite a long way!) Most people go to Nerja in order to visit the Nerja Caves.

Nerja is one of the gems of the south coast of Spain. It is about 40 minutes drive from Malaga, not much more from Malaga airport, and from Ronda about 2.5 to 3 hours. There and back it’s quite a long drive so we would recommend staying overnight or a couple of days to really explore the town and all it has to offer.

Setenil de Las Bodegas

For many thousands of years Setenil de las Bodegas has been occupied, possibly for as long as people have been using the Cueva de Pileta, though it wasn´t until the age of the Phoenicians and then Romans that the village was first mentioned in texts.

Always eclipsed by nearby Acinipo, Setenil was, at first, a warehouse for storing goods that were traded with other parts of Iberia or the rest of the Empire. It was during this time that archeologists believe the caves were first closed off with brick walls to prevent thieves from stealing goods produced in the area.
