Discover Acinipo: The Roman Ruins Near Ronda

Acinipo, also known as Ronda la Vieja (Old Ronda), is an ancient Roman archaeological site in the hills outside Ronda. Once an important city in the region, its atmospheric ruins offer visitors a chance to explore Roman history, enjoy impressive countryside views and discover a quieter side of the Serranía de Ronda.

Important access update: Acinipo is currently closed to visitors because of a road collapse affecting the MA-7402 access road. Check with the Ronda Tourist Office before travelling, as the reopening date has not been confirmed.

Nerja – Axarquia Costa

There are many naturally beautiful towns along the coast of Andalucia, and Nerja is one of the best. The town is one of Malaga’s white-washed villages in the style of the Moorish era. Nerja is famous for it’s old quarter with narrow alleyways, and not to be missed, the Balcon de Europa, a wide partially covered walkway with breathtaking views of beaches and Mediterranean.

Right behind the Balcon, visitors will find the 17th century Moorish/baroque Church of El Salvador, and close by the attractive town hall building. Horse and carriage tours depart from here, giving a magical impression of Nerja and the town’s cobbled streets.

A Daytrip to Nerja from Ronda

Visitors to Ronda find the city to be a wonderful location from which to explore the rest of Andalucia, and the Axarquía coast is within reach if you like road trips! (i.e. its quite a long way!) Most people go to Nerja in order to visit the Nerja Caves.

Nerja is one of the gems of the south coast of Spain. It is about 40 minutes drive from Malaga, not much more from Malaga airport, and from Ronda about 2.5 to 3 hours. There and back it’s quite a long drive so we would recommend staying overnight or a couple of days to really explore the town and all it has to offer.

Nerja Cave

Nerja is a small town on the Axarquia Costa del Sol east of Malaga. In itself it is an attractive little town to visit but is also home to the Nerja caves (Cuevas de Nerja). These caves are considered one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century and they have become one of Spain’s most popular attractions. Easily accessible to visitors, the caves are just 3km from Nerja town centre on the slopes of the Sierra Almijara mountains, with regular bus services. From Malaga, only a 35 minute drive. (add 2 hours more from Ronda.)

A Church Built on Centuries of History

Standing on Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, Santa María la Mayor is Ronda’s most important historic church. Its distinctive tower and broad façade make it look almost like a civic building, but behind its doors lies one of the city’s most remarkable stories.

The church occupies a site that has served as a place of worship for centuries. The present building stands on the remains of the city’s former mosque, which was transformed into a Christian church after the conquest of Ronda in 1485, creating one of the finest examples of Ronda’s layered history.
