The Spanish Ministry of Defence reported yesterday that a soldier from the Legion base in Ronda has been seriously wounded in a roadside bomb explosion while performing his duties in Afghanistan.
Soldiers from the 4th regiment ‘Alejandro Farnesio’ were dispatched to Afghanistan in March, and are working in support of the Afghan National Army in Western Afghanistan to maintain an open roads policy.
The wounded soldier announced as J.G.G. is described as a native of Málaga city but based in Ronda at the military barracks at La Indiana.
All together four Spanish soldiers were involved in the explosion when their Lynx patrol vehicle detonated a roadside landmine, the other soldiers were reported unharmed, however soldier J.G.G. suffered extensive blast injuries in both legs and was medivacced to military hospital at the Forward Support Base used by Spanish and Italian troops.
His condition has been described as stable after emergency surgery that lasted several hours, though the extent of injuries was not announced. The soldier’s family have been notified of his injuries.
