Poster for Olvera and Ronda Carnavals

Ronda Today received an email from a very excited local artists today, Alan Pearson, a man whose art is already featured in our artist pages. Alan emailed us to tell us he’d won a competition in Olvera for artwork to be used in the town’s Caranval 2010 poster.

Alan is justifiably pleased to have been selected because he’s made such an effort to integrate into the local community, with many prominent Spaniards in Olvera calling him a friend. As winner, Alan’s painting was selected from 10 submissions, and also won 300€ in prize money.

The artwork selected was a piece painted by Alan a wee while ago, and shows what Carnaval in Olvera might have looked like at the turn of the 20th century. The castle and church in Olvera can be seen towering above the townsfolk as they enjoy Carnaval in the streets of this beautiful little town only 30 minutes away from Ronda.

In Alan’s painting you can see a group of people playing a traditional game of Cancarro where a pottery jug is thrown around the circle, and behind them a swing setup with a rope suspended across the street.

Carnaval in Ronda is also scheduled for February, and below you can see Ronda’s Carnaval poster designed by José María Sabater, known locally as ‘Chemi’, a popular computer design artist.

Carnaval is a time of great celebration in Spain, and whilst not as flamboyent as those in Brazil they are certainly still very enjoyable. Look out for grand processions, street parties, and side show alley at the feria grounds in Ronda.

In the streets children will be eating candy floss, holding aloft balloons, singing Carnaval songs, and playing games. All told, Carnaval is a time when Spaniards let their hair down and party.

Local Girl Hopes to Represent Spain in Eurovision 2010

Rondeña Ángeles Vela is hoping to represent Spain in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Oslo during the last weeks of May. Angeles narrowly missed out last year after reaching the finals, to be beaten by Soraya whose disastrous performance in 2009 saw Spain finish the 2009 competition at the bottom of voting.

Ángeles Vela Moreno, a 21 year old girl from our own fair city believes she is better prepared this year having been through one selection contest and now understanding the voting procedures better. Support in Ronda has been encouraging, with family and fans of Ángeles actively drumming up support in anticipation of RTVE’s voting. Please vote for Ángeles, click here to vote!

This years song by Ángeles Vela is an R&B ballad with strong driving chords entitled “Tan Lejos De Ti”, which roughly translated means So far from you, and is being recorded with the intention of perhaps becoming her first single for release in the Spanish music charts. The song is composed by José María Tornay.

Towards the end of January RTVE’s Eurovision crew will open public voting for the top 50 applicants to represent Spain in Oslo, and Ronda’s Ángeles will be amongst the top five in the R&B category.

Ronda Tortugas Rugby Team Partner with Asprodisis

Ronda’s Tortuga Rugby Team have added a new project to their burgeoning club, offering social rugby games to people with intellectual disabilities as part of their ongoing rehabilitation. The association with Asprodisis was announced today after the success of the first game played between Asprodisis patients and members of the Ronda Tortugas third division team.

The first game was described by club president Hans Leuenberger as “an adventure” as players adjusted to making contact with the Asprodisis players. Initial hesitancy soon gave way to spirited playing as simple rules of the game were developed.

Players from the Asprodisis squad took to running with the ball with gusto, with everyone enjoying some good rugby, albeit at a very basic level. Ronda Tortugas are the first competitive team in the Andalusian league to partner with a mentall handicapped association, and weekly games have now been integrated into the therapeutic activities of Asprodisis.

The Ronda Tortugas Rugby team play in the third division Andalusian Rugby league, and have three junior training days, two in Ronda, and one in Arriate for children aged 4-11. It is hoped a full club with multiple teams can be developed in Ronda, whilst senior players hope that Ronda will be promoted to the second league in the next 2-3 years.

La Asociación Protectora de Personas con Discapacidad Intelectual de Ronda y la Comarca (Asprodisis) is the largest caregiver for intellectually handicapped people in the Serranía de Ronda, offering residential facilities, employment opportunities, as well as rehabilitation services to people of all ages and conditions.

Poster for Ronda’s Semana Santa 2010

Edit: You can get the itinerary for Ronda’s 2010 Semana Santa processions here.

The poster advertising Semana Santa 2010 in Ronda has been announced by the Hermandades del Huerto, Prendimiento y Gitanos, showing a photograph of one of the icons inside Ronda’s many churches.

Clothed in a red tunic with gold leaf, and supported by an angel, the float has already won the hearts and minds of Ronda’s Christians many of whom are delighted to see it featured on the poster used to promote the Holy Week in Ronda.

The poster was designed by Jesus Lopez and Ana Belen Cabrera who took the photo during Semana Santa 2009.

This year sees Easter fall between the 15th and 24th of April, though the official calendar of events for the week has yet to be finalised.

Holy Week, known as Semana Santa in Spanish, is a week of religious processions and fiestas, and is a bigger celebration than Christmas. Through Semana Santa each of the Catholic Brotherhoods of Ronda host their own processions, and most pass through Plaza del Socorro to receive blessings from senior priests in Ronda.

Also in 2010, the new Museum of the Fraternities will open in the old court building on Calle Armiñan, thus making 2010 an important year for Semana Santa festivities in Ronda. The Holy Week festivities in Ronda are amongst the most important in Andalucía, so the museum has been described by Luis Candelas, president of the Association of Fraternities and Brotherhoods as a welcome addition to Ronda’s initiatives.

Furniture Interpretation Centre building to be Repurposed

The furniture building on Calle del Guadaquivir, originally intended to be a furniture interpretation centre, which has been empty since shortly after construction has finally found a use, as offices for three of Ronda’s town hall departments.

Costing 1,200,000€ at construction in 2006, the building was intended to be a space for local furniture makers and artisans to display their goods, and for a period of several months this indeed was it’s function, however the interpretation centre never received the number of visitors envisaged, and closed months after opening. It has since been all but abandoned.

Toward the end of 2009 speculation in Ronda suggested the building might be converted into a public borrowing library and reference library, in addition to office space for the education department of the town council, but the idea was abandoned as impractical due to its location in the industrial area and cost of renovating to the standard required.

Today, Ronda’s mayor Antonio Marin Lara announced the building will receive a 120,000€ upgrade to install air conditioning, office partitions for the Parks and Gardens, Education, and Fiestas departments of the town hall.

Renovations are expected to commence next week and be completed by March 2010.
