General Strike in Spain Fizzles in Ronda

The national general strike today which has seen large groups of protestors in major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona failed to attract much attentuon in Ronda, will almost all shops, banks, restaurants and offices open for business today.

The public sector union, the CCOO wasn’t even successful in shutting down the town hall, with most departments open, though with noticeably fewer staff working however the number of people milling around seemed normal for a working day.

Protest action at 10am this morning failed to materialise, at 9:45 Ronda Today only managed to speak to three protestors, all nurses from the hospital, outside the town hall who seemed bewildered that they were alone.

A midday press conference originally called by the CCOO and UGT to explain their objectives found only representatives of the CCOO in attendance, with baffled CCOO representatives unable to explain the whereabouts of the UGT who represent a number of staff in the Unicaja call centre on Avenida Malaga which is one of the largest employers in the city.

Public works in Ronda came to a standstill, with no workers at the three sites on the Ronda circular road, and no protestors either begging the question what happened to Ronda’s protestors? Did they go to Malaga to join protests there, or did they take the day off and sleep in?

Future strike action by the CCOO at a national level is known to have been discussed, but by today’s record it seems doubtful Ronda will contribute much, and the general strike in Spain might be better characterised as a strike in major cities with limited effect.
